Fistula Update

Home from her appt. with Dr. Glassman…Payton loves having his picture taken with the little one.

Lainey had her appointment with the surgeon today, so he could see her fistula and tell us “the plan”.  He looked in her mouth and saw the small fistula smack in the middle of her palate.  He was not terribly surprised to see it for two reasons, (1) her repair was “tight”, as he told us right after surgery and, (2) most surgeons would have done her palate in two seperate surgeries, but we tried to get the whole thing repaired in just one (we all decided this), so a fistula is a chance you take.

The good news…he thinks it will shrink up SOME on it’s own, he does NOT think it will get bigger, and she does NOT need a seperate surgery to correct it.  Whew!!  He said it can wait to be repaired until she has her nose and lip revision, which should be around age 4.  We also talked about having her left ear tacked back a bit (it sticks out more than her right) and he said it could also be done at the same time.  Wow, 4 procedures in one surgery.  Now, if I could just share the operating table with her and get a tummy tuck at the same time?  I digress…

He doesn’t think this fistula will adversely affect her speech development, because it is so small.  She has no new restrictions because of it, we can continue trying a straw (with lots of supervision!) and keep using a sippy cup.  He also said we wouldn’t have to deal with no-no’s for this next surgery, since she’ll be old enough to be told to leave her mouth alone…another praise there!

So, all in all, a great visit.  We were preparing ourselves for another surgery and we’re SO happy to hear that isn’t the case.

Here are a few swimming pictures from the other day.  Did I mention she has NO fear of the water??

That face makes me just melt…

No, Randy isn’t doing this, SHE is.  Everytime he held her out front, she’d dunk her face in, over and over again and come up laughing.  Payton isn’t thrilled about this picture, but he consented to have it in the blog.  Thanks, dude.

Just the thought of her jumping into the water makes her giddy…sorry, I couldn’t time it right to get a shot her jumping in.  Maybe next time…

No longer the youngest kid in the family and loving his role as big brother.

See the look of pure joy on her face?  For those of you worried that Randy is MAKING her do these things, be assured…she gets BORED when we put her in her floaty and almost immediately asks to be taken out (signs “all done”).  Randy has spoiled her rotten and become her water entertainer.  I’m much more boring laid back in the pool, so I’m not her preferred playmate.

Two challenges we have with her in the water…she will NOT put her legs down when we try to teach her to float, they stick straight up in the air!  And, we’re having trouble teaching her to CLOSE her mouth when she goes under.  She thinks thats the time to open wide…needless to say, her diapers after swim time fill up fast :)

Lastly, we have a new member of the family.  Marley decided to spend her birthday money on a new pet…a hermit crab.  We bought her the cage for her birthday, and she bought everything else including Herbie the hermit crab.  She insists it’s a girl (I hear it’s nearly impossible to tell, unless you’re an expert in hermit crabs), so the name confuses me!

Her shell is very decorative, they come like that!

A closer look at little Herbie…the pet store said she’s a baby.  Awwww…

We are SO glad to hear the great news from the doctor!!! Can’t imagine how relieved you guys were when he told you all of the good details! Does she love that pool, or what…?!!! Looks like the boys had a good time, too! Marley told me while we were down that she wanted a hermit crab. I’ll bet she’s enjoying Herbie!! Hope Abbey had a good 1st week at Science camp and I’ll bet she’s looking forward to the 4 days next week!! Thanks for the good news…we feel better along with you!! Love to all, Mom & Dad

I checked the site AFTER I called you, but am still glad I called as I got to talk to you, Payton, Marley and Lainey. I am glad that Lainey won’t have to have another surgery any time soon and that everything can be done at one time in a couple of years. Loved talking to the kids about water slides and hermit crabs.

I love the way Lainey says Mama… Mamama (3 sylables)!! Glad to hear to that the fistula shouldn’t cause any problems in the speech processes.

You only have to look at Lainey’s face to see that NOBODY is forcing her to enjoy the water so much. Such pure joy is rarely seen !!!

That’s wonderful to hear that the fistula doesn’t present a major issue. Boy, she does love the water doesn’t she?

I don’t comment often, but I love your blog. It helped us to decide to check cleft palate on our MCC list.
I wanted to give Marley some tips on her Hermit Crabs. I have six of them for my second grade students. They vary in size with Grande as our largest. His shell is probably about the size of Marley’s fist. I buy most of them at PetCo but sometimes I feel like rescueing them from Pet Smart (they are not cared for well there).
Marley, make sure you have two water pools in your tank. One pool should be for fresh water and the other for salt water. Hermit crabs also like to live in pairs so save up and get Herbie a friend. I got a lot of helpful information from the Critters USA Magazine. It was the 2008 Annual Issue. I will be posting some pictures of my crabs on my classroom’s blog soon. It is password protected to protect my students. I just started it so I have only posted once yesterday. I’ll leave a comment here when I post about them and you can check them out. Enjoy your new friend.

    Dear Ms. Stringer,
Thanks so much for the tips. I was wondering, do they like it when you take them out alot? I know normally not to in the day because that is when they sleep, but do they like it at night? One more thing. If you have two hermit crabs, what size tank should you have? Mine is a little crammped with just one so I know i need a bigger one.Well, again thanks for the tips!
    Sincerely,
    Marley!

I just read through the article in Critters USA again to check on your questions. It says 3-5 crabs will be comfortable in a 10 gallon glass aquarium. The lid needs to be glass to keep the humidity level up. You need to have plenty of room for them to play(run)and places to dig. They do primarily bury themselves during the day and can get pretty loud at night. We can hear ours banging against the glass while we are going to bed. It is good to play with them, but try not to unbury them too much. They could be molting and that could cause them stress if you disturb the molting process. We have a 20L gallon tank and it seems too small sometimes, because of the empty shells I have to keep in the tank in case they want to switch shells. I recommend saving up and getting this size tank because hermit crabs themselves are not expensive and once you get a good setup you can add more to enjoy. The information can seem a little overwhelming at first, but once you get everything in place, you will love your crabs habitat and your crab will love you for it.
