2/25 Monday – Physical, shopping, paperwork, and a red couch

We had a very busy day today in Guangzhou!  After another scrumptious breakfast, we headed to the Physical Examination building.

Every child adopted from China must have a physical done before their Visa is issued.  We first stopped for a photo shot, and each child in our group had their photo taken (passport style).  We arrived for the physical about 10am and THANKFULLY our group was first in line.  I had heard stories of families standing in line for hours, with families and crying children crammed into this tiny building.  Whew.  There were 3 stations, (1) ENT hearing check and a peek into ears to check for infection, (2) height and weight, and (3) a quick overall check by the doc.

Say “ahhhh”…

Lainey did great, no ear infection, hearing okay (this wasn’t exactly high-tech she used toys to make noise on each side and watched for her to turn toward it), weight 24.5 and height 32.5, overall check fine.  The doc did spend a little bit of time looking at her hemangioma on her back.  We finally had our guide tell him that we knew about it and were fine with it.  I had failed to list it on the form we filled out at the beginning because we just don’t think anything of it.  It’s literally the size of a freckle. After the physical, which only took an hour total, we walked around a bit.  There are a lot of interesting bronze sculptures on Shamian Island.  Here are a couple of interesting pics from that.

Very life-like sculpture, don’t you think?

In line please, Lainey…

Shopping was next can I just say shopping in Guangzhou is fun?!  There are little shops all along the streets, and bargaining is the name of the game.  Randy is good at this, so we did well.  We especially enjoyed going to a shop called Jordan’s.  The place is run by a Chinese man named well, Jordan.  We’d been told about him by other families who traveled before us and knew that he’s also a Christian, so we were happy to leave a few Yuan with him.  Here he is doing Chinese calligraphy on well, that’s a surprise.

Hello from the 12th floor!

Back to the room, Randy stayed with Lainey-bug while I went to our guide’s room to do paperwork for our upcoming consulate appointment.  Playtime and a bath later, and we were ready for the Red Couch.

Here’s the scoop on that.  There are several red couches in the White Swan hotel and it has become a tradition for adoptive families to have pictures taken on these.  Our group (4 families) gathered today for our photos each family, the whole group with moms, dads, and kids, and then the children by themselves. I didn’t get permission to post pics of the others, so here is just our shot on the famous couch plus a few others for good measure.

We told you the waterfall was big, right?

We ended our day with dinner at Lucy’s bar and grill, very popular with adoptive families because of it’s traditional, American food.  We ate with Jennie and Merle, and their newly adopted 16mo old. Jennie and I met online more than 2 years ago, when we were both paperchasing for our adoptions.  I was so happy that it worked out for us to travel at the same time.  She’s also the person who made Lainey her adorable pink and green flannel blanket that’s been in a pic or two here.  Their blog is listed on my sidebar, under families we’re traveling with.

As you can tell by this picture, Lainey was done having her red couch picture taken.  We’re beginning to feel that way about our trip.  We’re having an amazing time, but we’re about ready to go home.  4 nights, 3 days until we leave, not that we’re counting.

You are almost done! To me, it seems like time has just flown by :) :) Thanks for all the wonderful updates! Like many people, it’s the first thing I check after some devotion time.
Blessings! I am already praying for God to orchestrate everything for the return home (flights on time, great seats, happy Lainey, etc…)

Hi guys!! SO SORRY…I didn’t realize that the phone call was so expensive…I’ll go more into detail about things around here on e-mail. It’s Monday AM and you talked to the kids awhile ago. It’s now 10:30. Abbey said she fixed the computer that was down due to the power outage here yesterday. She did a few thank you notes for her b’day gifts.

The pictures are wonderful…love how Randy and Lainey bug did their posing with the statues!! The waterfall is gorgeous and you & Lainey look soooo tiny!! So now we know about the red sofa (couch) I imagine Lainey loves her baths a lot…by herself. She’s living the life of a PRINCESS and she knows it…she’s also experiencing a LOT of LOVE from her new Mom & Dad…something that is new to her and it looks like she’s getting very used to it! How adorable she looks like in her China dress…not sure the correct word for it! I imagine you guys ARE getting homesick and will be more than ready to head back home…you’ve had a trip of a lifetime and we ALL have enjoyed your photos of China and especially of LAINEY!! So glad her physical went well…will she need any shots before coming to the USA?? I’m on Ethan’s computer and he’s ready to sit here next to Payton and play a game with him, so I’ll exit. (Now that Abbey fixed the computer in the kitchen, I will use that one again!) Love to all of you, Mom & Dad, etc.

  6. Anne Says:

Hey friend. I love the pictures and I am JEALOUS of your shopping opportunities. Lainey is of course a beauty queen and I want you to have her first “professional” pics done in her Chinese outfit- it suits her very well. Glad physical went well and was fast. We’re good- got a green cheek conure the other night- his name is Merlin- he is precious. He’ll be great for the school talks. Love you lots. Hugs to Lainey. Anne for the zoo crew.

  7. margaret Says:

I was surprised to hear that Lainey weighs 24.5 pounds….Lily is 28.8 pounds at 4 years old. I know she is petite but it made me smile and wonder if she and Graeme will look like virtual twins. Love the pictures…Keep them coming! Margaret

  8. Donna Says:

Margaret . . . this is Randy, and Graeme looked like a hoss when I was taking his picture. It was a bit hard to tell with all the clothes they have on him, but he looked considerably bigger than Lainey. He seemed to have a lot of personality, too.

  9. Lisa Says:

Love her outfit! She is soooo adorable. Praying for things to continue to go well and for your flight home.

  10. Teresa Says:

    Donna –

Great pics, as usual! Is it me, or has Lainey changed a bit since you got her? I don’t know — maybe she’s just more comfortable or something. Anyway, I really enjoyed the poses with the statues in Guangzhou…I tried to convince Meggie to pose with some of ’em while we were there but she wouldn’t. Your posts just make me smile!

Countdown to coming home…I bet your other kids are bustin’ at the seams to see you guys and meet their baby sister!!

Hi guys! Gee, Lainey just gets prettier and prettier! You are almost done with everything, them on to home! So, can I ask what size Lainey is wearing? I am trying to gauge what size Cassie will be in. Do you think they are around the same size?
Well, i can email you once you are home, we are still waiting for our LOA, so I have a while before I can travel.
Hope you have a fun day today! Enjoy the shopping.

What a precious girl! I’m so happy for all of you. Sure does make me want to do it all again!
With prayers of thanksgiving and praise to the Lord for precious Lainey and her parents,

  13. claireroyer Says:

Yo Donna, Randy and Lainey! Isn’t Shaiman Island fun? And don’t ya love The White Swan? Seeing your photos it seems like yesterday we were there. I agree with a previous poster. Lainey just gets prettier and prettier. She is an absolute angel! Loved the photo of the kids back home on the web cam. Very clever. Shop til you drop. Say hey to all the awesome shop girls and guys. And give the red chicken curry at Cow and Bridge a try. It’s to die for. Best wishes for a continued amazing trip and get home safe and sound.

  14. Donna Says:

Becky…Randy said that he thinks Cassie is about the same size as Lainey, though it was hard to tell with all the layers. She’s perfect in a size 18 months right now. We brought a couple of 12mos that were too small. Hope that helps!

Claire…We loved the Cow and Bridge, and yes Randy tried the red chicken curry. Too spicy for me, but he loved it! Shopping till we drop…
