{"id":367,"date":"2008-12-08T00:17:18","date_gmt":"2008-12-08T04:17:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.handsful.com\/?p=367"},"modified":"2008-12-08T00:42:19","modified_gmt":"2008-12-08T04:42:19","slug":"girl-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.handsful.com\/wordpress\/archives\/367","title":{"rendered":"Girl Power"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"vertical-align: top;\" src=\"http:\/\/im1.shutterfly.com\/media\/47b8cc26b3127ccec59a30ce9af900000040O08AYt2bRu1cswe3nwE\/cC\/f%3D0\/ps%3D50\/r%3D0\/rx%3D550\/ry%3D400\/\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Remember a little while back,\u00c2\u00a0I told you about Marley not making the pre-team for gymnastics?\u00c2\u00a0 If she would have made it, it would have taken her off the usual progression&#8230;beginner,\u00c2\u00a0experienced beginner, intermediate, and then advanced.\u00c2\u00a0 Well, she found out this past Tuesday that her coach is moving her up to the advanced class!\u00c2\u00a0 She was thrilled!!\u00c2\u00a0 I love it that God saw fit to deny pre-team, only to reward her shortly after with this.\u00c2\u00a0 It means 2 hours per week, rather than 1, but is MUCH less time-consuming than pre-team would have been.\u00c2\u00a0 Way to go, Marley!!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"vertical-align: bottom;\" src=\"http:\/\/im1.shutterfly.com\/media\/47b8cc26b3127ccec59b8414ba3500000040O08AYt2bRu1cswe3nwE\/cC\/f%3D0\/ps%3D50\/r%3D0\/rx%3D550\/ry%3D400\/\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is Abbey, looking both excited and extremely nervous.\u00c2\u00a0 Why, you ask?\u00c2\u00a0 We belong to a homeschool co-op, which meets every Friday.\u00c2\u00a0 Co-op means that classes are taught to our 200+ children BY the parents, with the exception of a few paid teachers for certain classes.\u00c2\u00a0 One of Abbey&#8217;s classes is Basic Engineering, and she has loved it.\u00c2\u00a0 A recent project was to build a bridge out of popsicle sticks and wood glue.\u00c2\u00a0 There were certain requirements, such as height, width, and type of stick used and those bridges that qualified were tested to see how much weight they could hold.\u00c2\u00a0 Last years top weight was 300 pounds.\u00c2\u00a0 Yowza.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"vertical-align: bottom;\" src=\"http:\/\/im1.shutterfly.com\/media\/47b8cc26b3127ccec59bb8d93bd600000040O08AYt2bRu1cswe3nwE\/cC\/f%3D0\/ps%3D50\/r%3D0\/rx%3D550\/ry%3D400\/\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here are the bridges&#8230;Abbey&#8217;s is 2nd from the left.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"vertical-align: bottom;\" src=\"http:\/\/im1.shutterfly.com\/media\/47b8cc26b3127ccec59aabbfda5d00000040O08AYt2bRu1cswe3nwE\/cC\/f%3D0\/ps%3D50\/r%3D0\/rx%3D550\/ry%3D400\/\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here is the set-up for weight testing&#8230;the bridge is put across a 12&#8243;x6&#8243; hole cut-out of the wood plank above, a piece of wood is placed on top, and the weight is suspended below by cables.\u00c2\u00a0 This is her teacher, an engineer husband of one of our group moms (Hi, Amy!).\u00c2\u00a0 This is Abbey&#8217;s bridge, with the 1st two weights put on.\u00c2\u00a0 He would place a weight, let the jack down to allow the weight to hang, and then count to 5.\u00c2\u00a0 If the bridge held, he&#8217;d slowly add more weight, about 5-10lbs at a time.<\/p>\n<p>I know the suspense is killing you, so I&#8217;ll jump ahead.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"vertical-align: bottom;\" src=\"http:\/\/im1.shutterfly.com\/media\/47b8cc26b3127ccec59b5d22faf700000040O08AYt2bRu1cswe3nwE\/cC\/f%3D0\/ps%3D50\/r%3D0\/rx%3D550\/ry%3D400\/\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is her bridge, right before it broke.\u00c2\u00a0 He had run out of room to put weights on the platform under the bridge, so he had to start stacking them directly on top.\u00c2\u00a0 Guess how much weight her popsicle bridge held?\u00c2\u00a0 553lbs.\u00c2\u00a0 Yes,\u00c2\u00a0that&#8217;s five HUNDRED!\u00c2\u00a0 The crowd was going wild!\u00c2\u00a0 lol&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"vertical-align: bottom;\" src=\"http:\/\/im1.shutterfly.com\/media\/47b8cc26b3127ccec59b39137bc400000040O08AYt2bRu1cswe3nwE\/cC\/f%3D0\/ps%3D50\/r%3D0\/rx%3D550\/ry%3D400\/\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A close up&#8230;the bridge basically exploded on that one end and sent the weights on top sliding onto the floor.\u00c2\u00a0 We were astounded that it held that much weight.\u00c2\u00a0 After doing popsicle bridge research on the internet, Abbey decided on what type of design she wanted and Randy and Abbey both worked hard putting it all together, sanding, gluing, clamping, etc.\u00c2\u00a0 One of the boys in the competition was overheard saying &#8220;No matter what, I&#8217;m beat by a girl&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0 Hee hee&#8230;
