We had a wonderful garden last year, full of tomatoes, beans, peppers, corn, watermelon, and cantaloupe. \u00c2\u00a0With the weather warming up, we’re preparing to start again.<\/p>\n

But, the winter was unkind to the garden and it was a big mess of dry weeds and grass. \u00c2\u00a0How to begin?<\/p>\n

Weed-eat it? \u00c2\u00a0Mow it? \u00c2\u00a0Till the soil and grass together?<\/p>\n

Thankfully, our wise neighbor Mr. Fesperman showed up. \u00c2\u00a0He’s lived across the street for decades, everyone knows and respects him, and he owns about 200 acres of land.<\/p>\n

Burn it.<\/p>\n

My response: \u00c2\u00a0Really? \u00c2\u00a0Are you sure? \u00c2\u00a0I mean, is it safe? \u00c2\u00a0How do we control it?? \u00c2\u00a0What if it gets OUT of control? \u00c2\u00a0And, what if…<\/p>\n

Randy’s response: \u00c2\u00a0Now, where did I put those lighter sticks…<\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n

He started the darn thing before I was even down there to help! \u00c2\u00a0What was he thinking?!?<\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n

And, notice that Randy is IN the fence. \u00c2\u00a0Counting on the wind to blow the fire AWAY from him and down the garden.<\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n

Did I mention he had ONE hose? \u00c2\u00a0The rest of us were watching like hawks, yelling “hey, over here!” and “watch that left side!” and “Oh, oh, it’s coming this way!!”<\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n

I was amazed at how fast the fire swept through. \u00c2\u00a0Obviously, the wind helped it along. \u00c2\u00a0At one point, the wind turned and was blowing the OTHER way, but it switched back quickly. \u00c2\u00a0Yes, I was nervous.<\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n

Right about now, Randy yells “I can’t see a thing”. \u00c2\u00a0Oh good, cause it’s not like seeing anything would be HELPFUL right now!!<\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n

See Randy behind all that smoke?<\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n

Almost to the end…<\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n

And, finished.<\/p>\n

After he sprayed it well to make sure nothing else was smoldering, he let it sit a while to cool off.<\/p>\n

Then, it was time to do the first pass with the tiller.<\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n

So, the moral of the story is…<\/p>\n

Randy can handle himself when it comes to fires.<\/p>\n

Burning the garden is definitely the quickest way to a freshly tilled garden.<\/p>\n
