{"id":1517,"date":"2011-02-01T23:25:08","date_gmt":"2011-02-02T04:25:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.handsful.com\/?p=1517"},"modified":"2011-02-01T23:27:23","modified_gmt":"2011-02-02T04:27:23","slug":"first-step","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.handsful.com\/wordpress\/archives\/1517","title":{"rendered":"First Step"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"flickr-image aligncenter\" title=\"151\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/70803758@N00\/5409700704\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4112\/5409700704_1beb6be3c8.jpg\" alt=\"151\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dylan &#8211; look closely, you can see his holding his little foot.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, we took our first step in the journey to help Dylan WALK. \u00c2\u00a0Our appointment at Shriner&#8217;s was at 9am&#8230;not too early, unless you factor in that we live more than 2 hours away from Greenville, SC. \u00c2\u00a0Getting up before the sun does is just wrong! \u00c2\u00a0I guess I&#8217;m spoiled.<\/p>\n<p>So the big kids could focus on their school assignments, we brought both Dylan and Lainey. \u00c2\u00a0I had to drive, following Randy in his company car, since he had a meeting scheduled in Columbia right after our appointment and then he was driving on to meetings in Atlanta for the next few days.<\/p>\n<p>Our day was spent registering as new patients and seeing different doctors, radiologists, nurses, and others. \u00c2\u00a0During our visit, we learned that the SC Shriner&#8217;s sees about 300 limb difference patients each year. \u00c2\u00a0And, at no cost to the patients. \u00c2\u00a0Amazing, and a blessing.<\/p>\n<p>Every time we entered a new room, Dylan would shed new tears. \u00c2\u00a0We&#8217;ve come to expect this when we&#8217;re in any type of &#8220;doctor&#8221; environment. \u00c2\u00a0Usually, he&#8217;s fairly easily consoled when we can convince him there are no &#8220;owies&#8221; coming.<\/p>\n<p>The x-ray showed that he does not have a working knee &#8211; only cartilage. \u00c2\u00a0We weren&#8217;t expecting anything more, honestly. \u00c2\u00a0Their plan is to amputate through the &#8220;knee&#8221; and fit him with a prosthesis. \u00c2\u00a0Surgery should be sometime in the spring &#8211; maybe April. \u00c2\u00a0We did learn that, with children this age, they cast the leg post-surgery for about 3-4 weeks to protect the leg as it heals. \u00c2\u00a0Oh joy. \u00c2\u00a0Another cast EXACTLY like the one he just got out of.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re waiting to hear from the surgery coordinator regarding an actual surgery date. \u00c2\u00a0It&#8217;s hard to look that far ahead &#8211; Lainey has her next surgery February 23rd. \u00c2\u00a0We told Shriner&#8217;s that we wanted the month of March off!<\/p>\n<p>Our challenge now is to somehow communicate to Dylan what&#8217;s coming&#8230;he loves his little leg. \u00c2\u00a0And, it makes me very sad to think of him losing it. \u00c2\u00a0Thankfully, we have friends here with a daughter that went through the exact same thing. \u00c2\u00a0We plan on taking our cues from them on preparing Dylan, not to mention tons of prayer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dylan &#8211; look closely, you can see his holding his little foot.
