{"id":1508,"date":"2011-01-26T22:51:15","date_gmt":"2011-01-27T03:51:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.handsful.com\/?p=1508"},"modified":"2011-01-26T22:57:45","modified_gmt":"2011-01-27T03:57:45","slug":"cast-off","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.handsful.com\/wordpress\/archives\/1508","title":{"rendered":"Cast off"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>No, I&#8217;m not talking about that old sweater in the back of my closet I no longer wear.\u00c2\u00a0 Dylan got his CAST off today!\u00c2\u00a0 Okay, I tried to make a joke.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"flickr-image aligncenter\" title=\"364\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/70803758@N00\/5391525813\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5293\/5391525813_9f7dc6dde5.jpg\" alt=\"364\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Seriously, though.\u00c2\u00a0 Marley&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"flickr-image aligncenter\" title=\"359\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/70803758@N00\/5391524885\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5017\/5391524885_c6e614f262.jpg\" alt=\"359\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>and Lainey accompanied me and Dylan to his appointment today.\u00c2\u00a0 I assumed they&#8217;d x-ray his leg before deciding to remove the cast&#8230;just in case.\u00c2\u00a0 I was thrilled to hear that they had no doubts.\u00c2\u00a0 It was completely healed and it was coming off!\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Marley was kind enough to take pictures of the whole process, since I was up on the table with Dylan resting against me.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"flickr-image aligncenter\" title=\"338\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/70803758@N00\/5392121698\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5012\/5392121698_7cd076a555.jpg\" alt=\"338\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t worry, Dylan isn&#8217;t foaming at the mouth.\u00c2\u00a0 Barclay, the child life specialist, was blowing bubbles to distract him.\u00c2\u00a0 The cast cutter was very loud (think dental drill) and we weren&#8217;t sure whether or not it would scare him.\u00c2\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t.\u00c2\u00a0 He wasn&#8217;t exactly happy the whole time, but he was calm &#8211; I think he went to his happy place, wherever that is.\u00c2\u00a0 She said it&#8217;s more the norm for kids to scream\u00c2\u00a0through the whole process.\u00c2\u00a0 She was impressed with our little man&#8217;s courage.\u00c2\u00a0 By the way, Barclay was there during the casting process, too.\u00c2\u00a0 If I ever need a scary hospital procedure done, I want her there with me, too.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"flickr-image aligncenter\" title=\"339\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/70803758@N00\/5391521279\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5213\/5391521279_9066623e22.jpg\" alt=\"339\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The\u00c2\u00a0nurse\u00c2\u00a0went completely down the leg side of the cast.\u00c2\u00a0 Then down the inside of the leg, and then down the waist section on the right.\u00c2\u00a0 Once all was cut, it was time for the&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"flickr-image aligncenter\" title=\"346\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/70803758@N00\/5391522015\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5053\/5391522015_0c129268cb.jpg\" alt=\"346\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>spreaders!\u00c2\u00a0 She cracked the cast open along each cut line.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"flickr-image aligncenter\" title=\"348\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/70803758@N00\/5391522753\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5093\/5391522753_d78ec9f76f.jpg\" alt=\"348\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And, then cut through all the cotton and inner plastic lining.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"flickr-image aligncenter\" title=\"351\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/70803758@N00\/5392124634\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5056\/5392124634_ca00a56175.jpg\" alt=\"351\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lifting him up, they slid out the bottom part and then lifted off the top part.\u00c2\u00a0 Voila, leg!\u00c2\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t look nearly as awful as I was told it would.\u00c2\u00a0 The skin was very dry, especially his &#8220;knee&#8221; area.\u00c2\u00a0 Dylan uses that area of his little leg to walk, so it gets used like a foot and has a thick callous on it.\u00c2\u00a0 His other knee looks the same, though not as bad.\u00c2\u00a0 They took him to x-ray and it showed lots of bone growth around the break &#8211; they were satisfied and will see him again in 2 months for another x-ray.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"flickr-image aligncenter\" title=\"354\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/70803758@N00\/5392125166\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5132\/5392125166_7bf5282823.jpg\" alt=\"354\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He was a happy boy to say goodbye to the cast and everyone involved!\u00c2\u00a0 Well, actually we brought the cast home.\u00c2\u00a0 They tore out all the (yucky) insides and taped the cast back together.\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe it&#8217;ll make a nice mobile for his room?\u00c2\u00a0 Heh.\u00c2\u00a0 And, no I didn&#8217;t make him wear the hat, he insisted!\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll try and post pics of the lovely bubble bath that I dumped him in when we arrived home!\u00c2\u00a0 He doesn&#8217;t seem to be in pain at all, but he is favoring the leg a bit (they said it was normal, his leg has been in that same position for a while and his hip could be sore).\u00c2\u00a0 He&#8217;s already scooting around the house a bit.\u00c2\u00a0 :)\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m so glad to have this journey over with!\u00c2\u00a0 Now, next Monday, we travel to SC for his Shriner&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0appt. to discuss his leg and eventual surgery and prosthesis.\u00c2\u00a0 The boy can&#8217;t catch a break from doctor&#8217;s offices!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No, I&#8217;m not talking about that old sweater in the back of my closet I no longer wear.\u00c2\u00a0 Dylan got his CAST off today!\u00c2\u00a0 Okay, I tried to make a joke.\u00c2\u00a0 Seriously, though.\u00c2\u00a0 Marley&#8230;
